An electric motor is an electrical machine which converts electrical energy into mechanical energy (usually rotational). Electric motors are used in fans, tape players, hair dryers etc. There are namely two types of electric motors AC (Alternating Current) motor and DC (Direct Current) motor. Let’s discuss the difference between AC and DC motor and find out how these two differ from each other.
10 Differences Between AC and DC motor:
- AC Motor: An AC motor is an electric motor which converts alternating current electrical energy into mechanical energy.
- DC Motor: An DC motor is an electric motor which converts direct current electrical energy into mechanical energy.
- AC Motor: Used in factories and industries.
- DC Motor: Used in household appliances like hair dryers, mixers etc.
- AC Motor: Does not require much maintenance.
- DC Motor: Require frequent maintenance.
4. Brushes and Commutator
- AC Motor: Don’t have brushes and commutator.
- DC Motor: Have brushes and commutator.
5. Torque and Speed
- AC Motor: Variable torque and high speed.
- DC Motor: High torque and variable speed.
- AC Motor: Less efficient as compared to the DC motor.
- DC Motor: More efficient as compared to the AC motor.
7. Armature and Magnetic Field
- AC Motor: Armature remains stationary while the magnetic field rotates.
- DC Motor: Magnetic field remains stationary while the armature rotates,
8. Speed Balance
- AC Motor: By changing frequency.
- DC Motor: By changing the current in the armature winding.
9. Load Change Response
- AC Motor: Load change response is slow.
- DC Motor: Load change response is fast.
10. No. of Phases
- AC Motor: Single or three phase.
- DC Motor: Single phase only.
